Scale-Up Team Manager

Fast-paced, early-stage industrial biotech company is seeking a proactive self-driven Team Manager to oversee scale-up and pilot operation of novel biomaterials processes. Ideal candidates will have managed research and development teams in late stage and scale up projects in the Industrial Biotechnology field, and be familiar with managing both research scientists and R&D Operators as well as with troubleshooting and improving first generation prototype equipment and processes.


This role involves:

  • Bring newly discovered and developed processes out of the lab and into pilot scale operation, where their reliability and commercial viability will be challenged and analyzed. 

  • Work closely with and serve as a link between Ecovative’s R&D Lab Community Manager and Commercial Operations Manager. 

  • Manage and develop a team of process oriented Research Scientists and R&D Operators who will be responsible for routine operation of Pilot Scale processes for the purposes of evaluating reliability, providing sample materials to test business opportunities, proving out technical specifications, developing critical to quality measures, and identifying and acting on opportunities to improve process and equipment.


Minimum Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science with a minimum three years’ experience managing teams within industrial biotechnology.

  • Must have a strong understanding of the unique requirements of industrial biotechnology, such as aseptic techniques and processes, designing for biological sources of variability, and development to commercial timelines typical of industrial applications versus food or pharmaceutical.

 Preferred Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Experience operating microbiological systems such as fermentation equipment in a research environment.

  • Quality Control training such as Six Sigma and Statistical Process Control, especially in industrial biotechnology.

  • Experience with the elements of transitioning a process from the research stage into routine practice including validation, development of critical to quality measures, implementation of training plans, checklists, and full documentation.
