Research Scientist- Fungal Genetics
Fast-paced, early-stage biotech company is seeking a Research Scientist with a fungal genetics focus to contribute to the leading edge of fungal genetic engineering and genetic diagnostic tool development at Ecovative. The role will support grant-related and development of novel microbial systems pursued through the analysis of biological communities, modification of microbial strains, and optimization of fungal morphologies. The Research Scientist works in both a supportive and an independent role with the Genetics Team and the entire research and development community with responsibilities including daily execution and maintenance of experimentation related to genetic engineering, gene expression characterization, and morphological characterization.
This role involves:
Use of aseptic technique in handling of fungal/bacterial cultures
Wild-type isolation, short-term and long-term strain preservation
PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR
Use of bioinformatics tools
Bacterial & Fungal Transformation
Use of HPLC
Preparation of materials/reagents for experimentation
Safe operation of industrial and laboratory equipment
Observation, note taking, and data collection for experiments
Maintenance of notes in an electronic laboratory notebook
Conducting literature research
Assisting with organization and cleaning of the lab spaces
Minimum Qualifications and Competencies:
Master’s degree in Cell Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or other related field and 2 years of
industrial laboratory experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Cell Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or
other related field and 5 years of industrial laboratory experience.
Experience in sub-cloning and strain engineering.
Expertise in cutting edge scientific techniques e.g., CRISPR, Next-Gen sequencing, RNA-Seq.
Exceptional organization skills.

Diligent team member.
Ability to hand mix materials. This role requires repetitive use of hands and arms on a routine basis.
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies:
Knowledge of aseptic technique.
Willingness and interest in learning from observation.
Interest and knowledge of mycology and/or experience working with fungi.
Experience executing fungal molecular biology work (transformation, RT-PCR, protein isolation and analysis, DNA sequence analysis.)
Capability and desire to independently manage/design experiments.
